Popularization of Science with Prof. Paulina Niedźwiedzka-Rystwej and Sulastri Arsad organized by Joanna Michalska. Mrs. Arsad, a PhD student at the Doctoral School of the University of Szczecin, Poland has come far away from Indonesia to pursue her studies. Her talk on the popularization of science is about the biodiversity of marine diatoms. Diatoms are microscopic algae living in water and moist soils with a worldwide distribution. They are characterized by their intricate glass-like cell walls called frustules, composed mainly of silica. These algae contain pigments such as chlorophyll and fucoxanthin, enabling them to perform photosynthesis. They can be seen with the naked eye when their presence is massive in waters. However, to study their individual cells, a microscope is required.
